Model mis-behaviour: Naomi Campbell wears real fur again
Naomi Campbell has been up to her old fur-wearing tricks again, with photos just rev
ealed from a photo shoot for Dennis Basso. In the photos, she poses in Basso’s Russian sable coats, which can cost up to $200,000.
Any celebrity wearing real fur will be pounced upon, but Campbell is the most hated of them all for her outrageous hypocrisy: in 1994 she took part… Continue reading | 3 Comments

BBC’s Wildest Dreams – a slightly bitter review
Is it just me, or did the BBC go out of its way to find ridiculo
us contestants for its ‘Wildest Dreams’ programme? In case you haven’t seen it, the premise is this: nine ‘ordinary people’ were flown out to Africa to learn the skills of wildlife film-making, facing a different challenge each week, with the worst performer being sent home.
I’m a little bitter because I would have loved to be on the show myself (I certainly didn’t see… Continue reading | 1 Comment

Crumbs! How ethical are your biscuits?
I take biscuits very seriously. A good cup of tea and a biscuit can be the only thing which keeps me going at half past three in the afternoon. They are a great source of debate – how much chocolate coating can a biscuit have before it becomes an item of confectionery? Is the Jaffa Cake a cake or a biscuit? And why do they still insist on putting Bourbons into Family Favourites tins when no-one likes them?
Something… Continue reading | 3 Comments

The Namibian Seal Cull
I tried to find out a little more about the annual Namibian seal cull over the weekend. It was in the headlines last week because two journalists who were trying to film the cull got arrested last week.
I’m ashamed to say I didn’t even realise this seal cull took place in Namibia. In my ignorance, I’d always associated seal culls with cold places like Greenland. But turns out 90,000 fur seals – mainly cubs – are killed off Namibia’s coast each year for meat, skin and fur.
Ironically, the blood bath takes place in a supposed… Continue reading

Environmental advertising
I love this round-up of cool environmental ads on Treehugger, which include Fiat’s panda/crash-test-dummy ad, and Surfer’s Against Sewage’s ‘No butts on the beach‘ campaign.
For comedy value, the ‘You Are My Sunshine’ ad by Greenpeace is pretty cool but I find the WWF video from Finland, in which polar bears are homeless in a busy city, the most disturbing… Continue reading | 1 Comment

Whale shark in action
As another aside, here’s a pretty cool video of a whale shark eating.

Otto The Juggling Octopus
As an aside to yesterday’s aquarium blog…I love this story I dug up about an octopus in a German aquarium which has been juggling with the hermit crabs in his tank. He also short-circuits the tank’s lights every night, and throws rocks at the glass.
I know that shows he’s bored and I don’t agree with him being in there, but if the hermit juggling footage was on YouTube, I’d probably watch it… Continue reading
