<p>Joining a &#8216;veg box&#8217; scheme has been on my list of green things I really ought to do for a couple of years but when I checked it out it seemed extremely restrictive &#8211; having to commit to the same thing every week, prohibitively expensive, or limited in what they offer.</p>
<p>But at the Camden Green Fair a few weeks back I visited the Farm Direct stall and their set-up is completely different.</p>
<p>You don&#8217;t have to order the same thing each time, and you don&#8217;t even have to place an order each week &#8211; perfect for me as I&#8217;m away such a lot. Also, they sell so much more than fruit and veg &#8211; they have meat, fish, cheese, fruit juice, bread, flowers, jams and more, with different options each week depending what they&#8217;ve sourced.</p>
<p>The depot is close to me in Holloway so I can go and pick it up if I can&#8217;t be in for delivery on a Saturday or Sunday. And though delivery normally costs £3.95, you get it free on your first order, and if you have a neighbour who&#8217;s also interested, they&#8217;ll deliver to you both for free. Apparently there&#8217;s someone else in my block of flats who&#8217;s already using the service so Farm Direct&#8217;s going to put me in touch with <a href="http://philippajacks.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Spinach.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1021" style="border: 5px solid white;" title="Spinach" src="http://philippajacks.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Spinach-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" /></a>them.</p>
<p>Farm Direct is also much clearer on exactly where all of their produce has been sourced from, right down to the name of the farmer, unlike veg box pioneers Able &amp; Cole who aren&#8217;t able to give you specifics. I loved reading that my<a href="http://www.farm-direct.com/epages/es118219.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/es118219_es123541120637/Products/BBF_012"> minced lamb</a> came from Nicola Bulgin&#8217;s Beatbush Organic Farm in Methwold, Norfolk; my <a href="http://www.farm-direct.com/epages/es118219.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/es118219_es123541120637/Products/GW_025">chicken</a> from Gill Wing’s Organic Farm in Sussex; my natural <a href="http://www.farm-direct.com/epages/es118219.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/es118219_es123541120637/Products/TD_010">yoghurt </a>from Chris Timotheou’s Dairy in Chalfont St Peter; my splendid <a href="http://www.farm-direct.com/epages/es118219.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/es118219_es123541120637/Products/FPC_051">rye loaf</a> made by Matt Jones’ Flour Power City Bakery in Surrey Quays, London; spinach from Martin Mackey Ripple Farm Organics in Canterbury, and so on.</p>
<p><a href="http://philippajacks.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/sainsburys-prices.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-1012" style="border: 5px solid white;" title="sainsbury's prices" src="http://philippajacks.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/sainsburys-prices.jpg" alt="Price comparison for Sainsbury's and Farm Direct" width="266" height="515" /></a>I&#8217;ve already had one salad using my rocket, cucumber and carrots and it was deeee-licious. They even threw in a bunch of dahlias for free as I had a promo code from the Fair!</p>
<p>But however much I&#8217;ve been impressed by the service and the quality of the produce they offered, I simply couldn&#8217;t justify it if it costs a lot more than I budget for. But I&#8217;ve just priced up what I&#8217;d normally have spent at Sainsbury&#8217;s and it&#8217;s barely any different.</p>
<p>In fact, the lamb, chicken and rocket came in cheaper. The total cost for the basket at Sainsbury&#8217;s would have been £17.39 (see pricing to the right).</p>
<p>For infinitely better quality produce, all locally-sourced, I paid just £18.36 with Farm Direct (see pricing below). And I didn&#8217;t have to struggle home on the bus with all my shopping bags!</p>
<p>There are still a few staples which I&#8217;ll have to go to the supermarket for &#8211; Ryvita, Actimel, tinned stuff and so on. But I&#8217;m hoping I might be able to stock up on these once a month since they aren&#8217;t perishable. Farm Direct also seems very open to new suggestions so I might put in a request for cottage cheese in case that&#8217;s something they can work on&#8230;</p>

The journalist visited a research facility which is developing methods of artificially cultivating saltwater fish (aquaculture has been used more for freshwater fish to date).</p>
<p>In many ways, I think aquaculture sounds like a sensible idea.</p>
<ul>
<li>Natural fish stocks around the world are now dangerously low because of overfishing. By farming fish in giant tanks, we can reduce the pressure on natural stocks while ensuring man&#8217;s food supply.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>As the fish nutritionist in this story points out, farmed fish on a controlled diet are free of the mercury and other contaminants found in fish taken from the sea.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>The story also suggets fish-farmers can charge more for farmed fish as they are more standardised in size, and the fish can reach the plate much faster (catching them really is as easy as shooting fish in a barrel&#8230;).</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Researchers are also trying to make the practise sustainable, by using waste-water to feel algae, which feeds plankton, which in turn feeds the fish.</li>
</ul>
<p>But I couldn&#8217;t help feeling uneasy about aquaculture &#8211; or at least, in the form in which it is described here.</p>
<ul>
<li>The description of how the fish eggs are extracted is pretty gross in itself:<em> &#8220;Flounder specialist Troy Rezek demonstrated “strip-spawning” on an anesthetized female, harvesting her eggs by pressing them out in a fluid-looking stream.</em>&#8220;</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>The fish might be free of mercury, but you can bet they require a lot of antibiotics and other medication because they&#8217;re kept in such close proximity.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>The story also says that a local company is now &#8220;air-expressing&#8221; fillets from North Carolina to other major cities in the US. A model built on air-freighting can hardly be the way forward &#8211; we&#8217;d certainly need to investigate inland fish farms as opposed to flying it inland from the coast.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>The journalist says that, because commercial fishmeal is expensive, the research centre has been experimenting with substitute protein sources such as soybeans. Considering the <a href="http://www.greenpeace.org/usa/campaigns/forests/forests-worldwide/the-amazon-rainforest">massive Amazon deforestation</a> that is already taking place to make way for soya plantations, developing yet another industry which depends upon it does not sound good.</li>
</ul>
<p>That said, the fish do have to be fed on something, and soya would be preferable to smaller fish being taken from the ocean to feed them &#8211; a practise which <a href="http://philippajacks.co.uk/2009/12/seaweb-the-oceans-pr-agency/">Kristian Teleki of SeaWeb mentioned in his lecture in December</a>.</p>
<p>I didn&#8217;t have a clue how big the global aquaculture industry is, but when I looked into it, I realised it&#8217;s huge:  WWF says almost half the seafood we eat have been artificially farmed, and that aquaculture is the fastest growing food industry in the world.</p>
<p>SeaWeb and WWF are extremely concerned about damaging aquaculture practises &#8211; but I see that both organisations are currently helping set up the <a href="http://www.worldwildlife.org/what/globalmarkets/aquaculture/aquaculturedialogues.html">Aquaculture Stewardship Council</a> (ASC) &#8211; a new body expected to be in operation by 2011. Furthermore, new global standards for the f<a href="http://www.worldwildlife.org/who/media/press/2009/WWFPresitem14387.html">arming of tilapia</a> were released just a few weeks ago, with several other species guidelines to come, so I&#8217;m hopeful that aquaculture will develop in a responsible and sustainable way in the future.</p>

<p>85-year-old Molly Forbes, who lives on the Menie Estate, says the development will threaten her home. She&#8217;s launched a legal challenge against the plans, claiming that environmental assessment regulations were not met, and that the impact of the complex on nearby conservation sites has not been considered. <em>The Scotsman</em> <a href="http://news.scotsman.com/scotland/I39ll-fight-him-on-the.5850318.jp">pits Forbes and Trump against each other</a> as David and Goliath in terms of their respective property portfolios &#8211; though when the journalist describes Molly&#8217;s legal representation as an expert on &#8220;<em>environ-mental</em> matters&#8221;, I&#8217;m not sure he intended the hyphen&#8230;.</p>
<p>It got me thinking about other negative stories I have read about the impact of golf on the environment.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m not against golf and golfers per-se. I once had a very enjoyable lesson at The Belfry and apparently I showed great promise. And I&#8217;ve picked up on a few &#8216;good news&#8217; stories about the eco-credentials of golf recently.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.rspb.org.uk/news/details.asp?id=tcm:9-233928">RSPB has this month co-authored a book</a> which says golf courses can play an important role as sanctuaries for endangered birds and other wildlife. It&#8217;s had some reports of golfers who combine playing the sport with wildlife-spotting (&#8216;birdies&#8217; and &#8216;eagles&#8217; I presume?)</p>
<p>And a few months back, I spoke to Carlton Carugati, general manager of the International Association of Golf Tour Operators, who explained about a new species of grass which can live on salt-water, meaning valuable drinking water supplies are not affected.</p>
<p>But while I can appreciate some golf courses are really doing their best (as the Golf Environmental Awards attests), I can&#8217;t help thinking that the overall impact of golfing, and particularly the construction of new courses, is pretty negative.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.tourismconcern.org.uk/index.php?page=golf-2">In 2004, WWF estimated</a> that 10,000-15,000 cubic meters of freshwater were needed to keep golf courses in south-east Spain green for a year: <em>&#8220;At this rate, the water used on one golf course could supply a town of 12,000 inhabitants with enough water for a whole year&#8221;. </em>Salt-water grass sounds marvellous but until all golf courses are obliged to use it, a lot aren&#8217;t going to bother.<a href="http://philippajacks.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/wwf_golf_sponge.jpg"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-782" style="border: 5px solid white;" title="A WWF Turkey ad about how much water golf courses use" src="http://philippajacks.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/wwf_golf_sponge-150x150.jpg" alt="A WWF Turkey ad about how much water golf courses use" width="150" height="150" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2007/oct/16/comment.golf">Columnist George Monbiot </a>highlights another study which says an 18-hole golf course requires 22 tonnes of chemicals and pesticides per year.</p>
<p>The<a href="http://www.tourismconcern.org.uk/index.php?page=golf-2"> Tourism Concern website gives lots of instances of environmental and social damage </a>caused by the creation and sustaining of golf resorts around the world.</p>
<p>Just last week I was interested to learn that golf balls can take up to 1,000 years to decompose, and that they release a dangerous amount of zinc as they do so. When <a href="http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/92744/Nessie-is-dodging-golf-balls-800ft-down">they dredged Loch Ness in Soctland in April</a>, they found a very different monster from the deep &#8211; hundreds of thousands of golf balls just sitting there, poisoning the water.</p>
<p>Golf ball littering is fairly easily resolved: any golfer who&#8217;s aim is not so good (and not just you, Dad) should invest in the <a href="http://www.ecogolfballs.com/">biodegradable golf balls</a> that are now on the market, made from water-soluble materials.</p>
<p>But to address the wider issue, and since the popularity of golf shows no signs of waning in future, I wonder if there ought to be a system of green certification so that those golf clubs which really strive to be environmentally responsible can be distinguished. A kind of &#8216;fair trade&#8217; guide to golfing, perhaps. Or would that be &#8216;<em>fairway</em> trade&#8217;?</p>
<p>But I can&#8217;t help thinking the overall global impact, particularly of the construction of new courses, cannot be a good thing.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I was interested to find out more about the <a href="http://www.rainforest-alliance.org">Rainforest Alliance</a> at WTM last week. I first heard about the organ<a href="http://philippajacks.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/rainforest_alliance.jpg"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-763" style="border: 5px solid white;" title="Rainforest Alliance logo" src="http://philippajacks.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/rainforest_alliance-150x150.jpg" alt="Rainforest Alliance logo" width="150" height="150" /></a>isation <a href="http://philippajacks.co.uk/2009/10/honduras-needing-tourism-more-than-ever/">when I was out in Central America</a> last month &#8211; it&#8217;s a not-for-profit organisation with three distinct arms, advising and campaigning on sustainable agriculture, forestry and tourism in rainforested areas around the world.</p>
<p>Its work in tourism ranges from training hotel staff on green technology, to helping them attain certificates of sustainability, to educating tourists on how they can minimise their own impact upon the environment while on holiday.</p>
<p>Its sustainable tourism programme began in Ecuador but it&#8217;s really been picking up pace, and has recently signed agreements with the  Guatemala tourist board, and <a href="http://www.ttglive.com/c/portal/layout?p_l_id=61139&amp;CMPI_SHARED_articleId=3017987&amp;CMPI_SHARED_ImageArticleId=3017987&amp;CMPI_SHARED_articleIdRelated=3017987&amp;CMPI_SHARED_ToolsArticleId=3017987&amp;CMPI_SHARED_CommentArticleId=3017987&amp;articleTitle=Central%20America%20teams%20up%20with%20Rainforest%20Alliance&amp;fromSearch=yes">CATA, a tourist board for the whole Central American region</a>.</p>
<p>The Alliance&#8217;s Federico Salano tells me he&#8217;s seen interest in and take-up of sustainable tourism really surge in the last five years. Europeans are particularly ethically-conscious travellers, he adds.</p>
<p>&#8220;You simply cannot make business with European companies if you don&#8217;t have a sustainable tourism programme now,&#8221; he says. &#8220;Now it&#8217;s a reality more than a trend.&#8221;</p>
<p>There are several UK tour operators who currently work with the Rainforest Alliance, with more big names to come onboard soon. Signing an agreement with the Alliance means the operator commits to ensuring that half of the hotels and other businesses it works with have appropriate green certification.</p>
<p>It sounds like a fantastic programme, but I wonder if they could perhaps set the bar even higher. What&#8217;s to stop a tour operator dealing with the most gas-guzzling, tree-felling, water-polluting tourism businesses in the Americas for the other 50% of their business?</p>
<p>One thing&#8217;s for sure: the system of green accreditation and certification within the tourism industry needs a proper sort out. There are so many confusing acronyms out there &#8211; <a href="http://www.turismo-sostenible.co.cr/EN/home.shtml">STCNA</a>, CST, <a href="http://www.sustainabletravelinternational.org/documents/op_steplearn.html">STEP</a> and <a href="http://www.carec.org/projects/hotels/qtc_project.htm">QTC</a> to name a few &#8211; that you can&#8217;t see the wood for the trees, if you&#8217;ll excuse the pun.</p>
<p>Federico tells me that the Rainforest Alliance is teaming up with the UN and several other bodies to launch the Tourism Sustainability Council or <strong>TSC</strong> in April next year. It will be the &#8216;certifier for certifications&#8217;, &#8220;giving order to the myriad certifications and checklists around the world,&#8221; he says.</p>
<p>Great news, but I wish they&#8217;d come up with a snappier name!</p>

<p>It&#8217;s going through an exciting period right now. It&#8217;s hoping to sign codeshare agreements with international players like Continental Airlines, Copa, Mexicana and Iberia in the near future.</p>
<p>This means passengers won&#8217;t have to check their luggage back in at Costa Rica&#8217;s San Jose airport before they fly onto their final destination with NatureAir.</p>
<p>The airline currently flies only within Costa Rica and to Panama and Nicaragua, but commercial director Alexi Khajavi told me he hopes to expand into Colombia, Honduras and Guatemala soon too.</p>
<p>The airline is based in Costa Rica and offsets all of the carbon emissions it creates by supporting reforestation and conservation projects. It also uses some of the most fuel-efficient aircraft on the market, and runs its craft on biofuel. In May this year, it won a prestigious <a href="http://philippajacks.co.uk/2009/05/tourism-for-tomorrow-awards-a-few-surprises/">award for conservation from the World Travel and Tourism Council</a>.</p>
<p>&#8220;In one year, what we emit through 100,000 flights is the same as a Boeing 747 in one flight from New York to Heathrow,&#8221; Alexi says.</p>
<p>When you see the vast list of ways in which NatureAir gives back &#8211; both to the environment and to local communities &#8211; you might suppose the airline would struggle to make a profit, but that couldn&#8217;t be further from the truth.</p>
<p>&#8220;None of our sustainable practices would matter if we weren&#8217;t a profit-making business, which we are,&#8221; says Alexi. &#8220;We&#8217;ve taken market share, and we&#8217;re growing at a rate of 20% per year.&#8221;</p>
<p>I can&#8217;t see why other domestic and regional airlines have not followed suit; committing to carbon neutrality certainly seems to have been a successful business model for NatureAir. Alexi points out that NatureAir&#8217;s typical client is environmentally-conscious and does not mind paying slightly more for their ticket, in order to fly with a more sustainable airline.<a href="http://philippajacks.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/NatureAir3.jpg"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-753" style="border: 5px solid white;" title="NatureAir - the world's first carbon-neutral airline" src="http://philippajacks.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/NatureAir3-150x150.jpg" alt="NatureAir - the world's first carbon-neutral airline" width="150" height="150" /></a></p>
<p>Alexi would certainly welcome other airlines copying NatureAir&#8217;s example: &#8220;We will always be the first airline to go carbon neutral but we don&#8217;t want to be the only one,&#8221; he says. &#8220;The aviation business is going in this direction. You&#8217;ve either got to get on the bus or you&#8217;re going to get run over.&#8221;</p>
<p>I was impressed to hear that Alexi&#8217;s colleagues are attending <a href="http://en.cop15.dk/">Copenhagen</a> next month to represent the aviation industry alongside five or six massive international carriers. A &#8220;David and Goliath situation&#8221; by Alexi&#8217;s own admission but NatureAir seems to have just the kind of forward-thinking the aviation industry so desperately needs.</p>

<p>Discarded plastic bags were causing the deaths of birds, turtles, dolphins and other marine creatures which swallowed or became entangled in the rubbish blown out to sea. I&#8217;ve dived the Red Sea a couple of times and been disappointed to see litter &#8211; it really makes your heart sink.</p>
<p>But the governor of the Red Sea brought in legislation in January, and the campaign seems to be doing extremely well.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.hepca.com/red-sea-plastic-bags.aspx">HEPCA</a> (Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association) has now given out 50,000 cloth bags free-of-charge; most local restaurants and shops have started giving out paper bags instead, and people are re-using their plastic ones.<a href="http://philippajacks.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/ancient-mariner-007.jpg"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-733" style="border: 5px solid white;" title="An albatross full of plastic from the Pacific" src="http://philippajacks.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/ancient-mariner-007-150x150.jpg" alt="An albatross full of plastic from the Pacific" width="150" height="150" /></a></p>
<p>In a perfect example of how going green usually has even wider benefits, the making of these fabric bags has generated much-needed employment for local women.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a lovely ‘good-news’ story, but what a contrast to <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/gallery/2009/nov/03/albatross-plastic-poison-pacific?picture=355118656">the photo-story on <em>The Guardian</em> site</a> yesterday that highlighted the monstrous swathes of plastic floating around in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.</p>
<p>A mass of plastic bottles, caps and beer can loops the size of Texas is hidden beneath the surface of the water, breaking down into tiny parts that get into the food chain at the lowest level.</p>
<p>The effect on bird life is also catastrophic. Albatrosses pick up the litter and feed it to their young, thinking it&#8217;s food. On the nearby coral atoll known as Midway are the corpses of thousands of albatross chicks which have died from starvation, toxicity, and choking. <a href="http://philippajacks.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/albatross-3.jpg"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-736" style="border: 5px solid white;" title="Dead albatross on The Midway" src="http://philippajacks.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/albatross-3-150x150.jpg" alt="Dead albatross on The Midway" width="150" height="150" /></a></p>
<p>The photographer, Chris Jordan, did not interfere with the corpses in any way &#8211; the photos show the exact contents of the chick&#8217;s stomach when it died what must have been its very painful death. <p>You don&#8217;t see so much about &#8216;Keeping Britain Tidy&#8217; any more. It&#8217;s perhaps a less pressing concern in the face of irreversible climate change, but these photos have been a chilling reminder to me of why litter is still very much something we should be worrying about.</p>

<p>For cereal and porridge, I&#8217;ve had to swap from soya milk to rice milk, which is much more drinkable. And I&#8217;ve had to allow myself one cup of tea with real milk per morning, as I couldn&#8217;t finish a mugful made with either soya or rice milk, and I don&#8217;t think anyone would begrudge me one cuppa a day.</p>
<p>Entirely by chance I happened to give up dairy at the same time as <a href="http://www.naturalsoya.co.uk/">Natural Soya Week</a>, and I came across a website with lots of useful info.</p>
<p>Unfortunately it&#8217;s also confused things for me rather, as I&#8217;ve been reading that <a href="http://www.naturalsoya.co.uk/same.htm">not all soya products are created equal</a>&#8230;.unscrupulous soya companies use unsustainable practices, clearing the Amazon rainforest for their plantations almost as quickly as the cattle farmers are.</p>
<p>The European Natural Soya Association (ENSA) which is behind Soya Week has a charter which ensures its members do not buy soya grown on land that was previously rainforest, do not use GM ingredients, and use only natural manufacturing processes &#8211; that is, using the whole soya bean rather than &#8216;isolates&#8217;.</p>
<p>Alpro is the only ENSA member that sells products in the UK, so if I stick to that (expensive as it is), I should be assured that my blueberry yoghurt is ethically sound. I saw some infinitely cheaper Sainsbury&#8217;s no-frills soya milk for just 60p, but I doubt it meets the rigorous ENSA criteria if it can be produced that cheaply.</p>
<p>Once I&#8217;ve got through my box of rice milk, the next variety I&#8217;ve bought to test is&#8230;.oat milk. How they manage to squeeze milk out of an oat &#8211; surely one of our driest foodstuffs &#8211; is beyond me. I&#8217;m rather hoping the milk will taste like flapjack.</p>
<p>So in terms of milk and yoghurt, I&#8217;m fairly happy, but the lack of cheese could prove my undoing.<a href="http://philippajacks.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/goat.jpg"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-671" style="border: 5px solid white;" title="is goat's milk more ethical than cow's milk?" src="http://philippajacks.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/goat-150x150.jpg" alt="is goat's milk more ethical than cow's milk?" width="150" height="150" /></a></p>
<p>I wondered if goat&#8217;s cheese (feta, mmmmm) would be an acceptable alternative, but from what I can gather, goats bred for milking tend to be kept in similar production-line conditions to dairy cows.</p>
<p>Even if you bought organic goat&#8217;s milk products, from goats who led the life of Riley, you can&#8217;t escape the fact that the goat spends most of its adult life pregnant, so the milk is still full of hormones, and there&#8217;s still the question of what they do with all the huge number of unwanted male goats that are born.</p>
<p>So I&#8217;m currently in search of some soya-based alternatives.</p>
<p>Soya cheese was a little beyond Sainsbury&#8217;s means, so I&#8217;m going to have to head down to Mother Earth. I&#8217;m not relishing the sound of <a href="http://www.goodnessdirect.co.uk/cgi-local/frameset/sect/CDACH_Non_dairy_Cheese.html">products like &#8216;sheese&#8217; </a>though, I&#8217;ll be honest&#8230;&#8230;</p>
